How To Stay Christian In College

Friend, I know — it is not always easy to stand up for our faith and not let the ways of the world affect us. This is especially difficult when our faith is tested in a difficult environment, as the college tends to be. We need to be mindful of walking with the Lord, seeking Him on a daily basis and not conforming to this world. But how do we do that? Here are a few things I have found to be important in staying a Christian while attending college or university.

Tips For Balancing God and School

This is a topic very near to my heart, given that I am four years into university and currently working on a Masters – and life can get very hectic so easily. I can remember thinking and praying about this so many times, trying to figure out how to balance God and university when the season is incredibly busy and I cannot fit everything into my schedule.

Looking back, I can see that God has been there in every moment, answering every prayer and desperate cry. It is definitely not always easy, trying to make time for God every day. But there is grace for every moment, and God will meet you where you are. He gives strength to the weak and rest for the weary.

So here are a few tips on how to balance God and school, for those of us who need to keep working on this.

Tips For Balancing God and School

Make time for Jesus in the morning.

Maybe you are not a morning person. Maybe it is quite painful to be waking up so much earlier that you would have time for devotions – but I find that this is essential. Once you are in school, life has a tendency to take over and suddenly there is so much more to do than you even thought there would be. So make time for Jesus in the morning – half an hour is enough to read the Bible and pray. That way you will go, with your heart in the right place and your ears open to hear God’s voice through the day.

“O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, to see Your power and Your glory.” (Psalm 63:1-2)

Pray for the day and the assignments.

I go through these seasons when I honestly am not even sure how I will make it through it all, with exams and assignments and everything. But God will answer every one of your prayers. He will give you strength and wisdom. So pray for the day and the assignments, that God will go before you and help you, give you wisdom and understanding. Then see how He will answer those prayers and praise Him every time you realize that He has answered you once more.

“Rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer” (Romans 12:12)

Know that it goes in seasons.

There are seasons when I am excited to wake up in the mornings to spend time with Jesus before heading out to school. And then there are seasons when I am so incredibly busy with school that there is no time to even live life, and it is a fight to make time for Jesus and meet all the deadlines. But it always goes in seasons, and a new season will eventually come.

To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

Consider making time for Bible study at school.

For a couple years, I used to meet up with this sweet girl in my class once a week during the school days when we had a skip between classes. We studied through a few books of the Bible together, discussed about God and what we had learned, and prayed for each other. It was so, so good and encouraging.

Extend grace to yourself.

It is okay not to get the best grade in everything. It is okay to feel like you cannot handle it all. That does not make you a failure. You are still very much loved by your heavenly Father. He will help you and give you everything you need in this season. It will be alright.

“And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
