Book Review: Married for God by Christopher Ash

Married for God by Christopher Ash

We often give our own needs, wants, and goals first priority. But what is God’s design for our marriages? With clarity and conviction, Christopher Ash turns us away from marriage for ourselves and toward marriage in the service of God. With practical applications for everyday life, Ash shows us God’s purposes and patterns for every part of the marriage relationship.

Married for God by Christopher Ash

In his book Married for God, Christopher Ash reminds the reader of the meaning of marriage in the service of God. He looks at what God’s Word says about marriage and what is the point of the marriage institution. In a day and age where more and more people live together without getting married, this is such an important topic to discuss.

Now, Married for God actually focuses mainly on sex. This is a very good thing, as the book looks at sexual sin, God’s purpose and rules for sex, as well as the purpose of sex within the marriage. As sex is not often talked about in the Christian circles, I think this book is a great resource for truly understanding the purpose of sex in marriage. Christopher Ash also discusses what is the point of having children and what God’s Word says about having children.

In Married for God, Christopher Ash also tackles the topic of singleness. He discusses whether it is better to stay single and why believers need to leave room for that possibility. He challenges the married people in how they relate to single people — and this, I find, is so important. Single people can often feel left out and married couples usually befriend other married couples, leaving the singles out. I think it’s important for married couples and families to reach out to singles.

Married for God by Christopher Ash is a short book that is easy to read. It does not discuss how to build a better marriage. Rather, Christopher Ash looks at the setting of the marriage institution and what God’s Word says about marriage. I think this book is great for all of us — single, engaged or married. But I think this book is especially beneficial for engaged people.
