when remaining is difficult

Monday

“Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.” (Psalm 62:8)

Remaining, I have found, is one of the hardest things of late. Reasons for this are varying, and maybe you are experiencing this as well — days when it just hurts to live through one more day like this. Days when the burden you are carrying is becoming too heavy for you to bear. Days when you just wish that something would be different, that there would be more hope to be seen. Days when you are spent from giving all that you possibly can.

To be honest — remaining is hard for me because when I am pushed past my limits, I would rather run than remain. When my chains weigh me down, when my hurts pull me toward darkness. I would rather be somewhere where I can breathe easily than remain and hold on to hope that one day it will be better. I would rather be in a place where I can see change, where I can see something happening.

Yet, I am convinced that the place I want to be at the most, is the place where the Lord wants me to be. And I am sure you would say the same thing.

“If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.” (2 Timothy 2:12-13)

The things is, there will be trials and hardships we need to endure for the Lord. There will be these times that bring us to our knees, that strip everything away from us. Yet, it is during these times that we see that the Lord is always there for us and there is such comfort to be found in choosing to look at life with eternal perspective.

We are told that there is eternal reward when it comes to enduring trials and difficulties — and our affliction is working for us this eternal weight of glory. All the hurt and the hardships, they are worth enduring in light of eternity. But the Lord does not leave us there, with this hope of eternal reward. God, He reminds us of something else — that He remains faithful. No matter our circumstances; no matter whether we are faithful or not. He will be there for us and with us because that is who He is.

But what do we do when remaining is difficult? What do we do when we would rather give up or give in? How do we find the strength to remain where we are?

“It is good to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; to declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, and Your faithfulness every night” (Psalm 92:1-2)

When remaining is difficult, we can choose to declare His lovingkindness the first thing in the morning and His faithfulness every night. At first, it might not be easy. When the wounds in our hearts are gaping open; when the circumstances do not change; when there is no hope in sight — it feels much easier to try to build walls around our hearts, to desperately hold on to all of it ourselves.

Yet, there is only peace to be found — these gentle scarred hands that will take us as we come, that will hold our hearts and wipe away the tears. With each thank you, these chains will chip away and loosen their hold. When we sing praises to His name, our burdens will be lifted off our shoulders as we lift up our eyes to Him and see His goodness. Bit by bit, light will overcome the shadows and love will ease us of our burdens. Bit by bit, we will find our footing and it will be easier to remain

When remaining is difficult for me, I too find that praising Him and declaring the Lord's goodness is a marvelous help! Singing worship songs is one of my favorite ways to praise Him. Always elevates my inner condition! Visiting here from Word Filled Wednesday.

Singing worship songs is definitely a sure thing to make my heart sing praises to the Lord and see the hope and the grace of God in the everyday. Thank you for your visit, De!

Yes, I understand that pull to run instead of remain. But I think you found the heart of the solution for the tension: focus on being wherever God wants you to be. Truly, there is no better place. Clinging to that truth and grace with you today. Glad to be visiting from Jennifer's.

I am not good at remaining--or resting (which is sort of the same thing, right?) I want to GO GO GO and DO DO DO-- especially when things get hard. My nature to control keeps me from experiencing that perfect peace that I can access ALL THE TIME in the presence of God. It is definitely something I am working on... Thanks for the reminder, sweet friend :-)

Remaining and resting, yes, they kind of fall into the same category in my book! Especially in that I'm a work in progress in both aspects -- learning to remain where God has placed me, and learning to stop doing it all by myself and trust that He will work through me. :)

Those difficult times really grow us, but it is hard to see their purpose in the moment! You wrote such truth about remaining. God never leaves us, so we need to stay with Him.

    • Ronja

Amen! Sarah, there is so much truth in your words! Those difficult times really do grow us so much when we turn to the Lord and truly learn to trust Him with all our hearts. But it is so hard to see anything but your pain or weariness in the middle of it all. Thank you so much for this! What a blessing it is to have you visit here, Sarah!

  • Oh what an encouraging and beautiful post here... I also cling to His Record during those seasons of suffering. I remember all the other hard days of 'remaining' and how My Heavenly Father carried me through and blessed me in profound ways that only He could do! I find peace in that truth!

So much good theology you've packed in here! When the going gets tough, we must train our minds to the truth revealed in Scripture; you've shown a good example of that! May you continue to see God's grace in keeping you as you remain in His truth. #FellowshipFridays
